The camera sits low and tilted, looking up at her from the hip line so the wall runs a diagonal behind her shoulder and the lantern above her head becomes the top edge of the frame. She is a single original student standing with her back settled against the timber pillar of a night-time arcade, weight sunk into her right leg while the left knee bends forward, so her hip cocks and the line of her body from ankle to shoulder is one long deliberate curve. Her arms are folded high across her chest, the left forearm over the right, her right hand gripping her own left elbow, fingers pressed into the sleeve; the kimono's dark indigo silk pulls taut at the crossed arms and falls in a clean column below the obi, its collar set deep and straight, sleeves hanging heavy with the weight of the cloth. Her short light-blue hair is cut in a bob with a longer sweep of bangs across the brow, the ends lifting slightly at the nape from the night air. The black fox mask is worn over the right half of her face only: one lacquered white-furred ear tilts up beside her right temple, the mask's slanted eye slit sits over her right eye, and its curved snout juts forward past her cheek, while the left half of her face is fully bare — dark brown skin, a cool, level eye looking down at the viewer with lowered upper lid, lips closed and flat, one brow faintly raised. The mask strap runs behind her ear and disappears into her hair. Her gaze is fixed on the viewer and does not soften.
Above her head floats the halo: a thin ring of pale cyan light hanging in the air a hand's width above her crown, tilted slightly with the dutch angle, its light spilling down onto the top of her hair and the tip of the fox mask's ear. A single red paper lantern hangs on the pillar just left of her, its warm orange glow the only light source; it strikes the left side of her jaw, the bare left cheek, the shoulder of the kimono, and the lacquer of the mask's edge, while the right half of her face behind the mask, the underside of the obi and the deep folds of the sleeves fall into cool shadow. Beyond the lantern's pool the arcade is nearly black, with only a faint blue rim on the far wooden lattice.
Colour is disciplined to three families and the black: the dark indigo of the kimono and its near-black obi, the warm orange of the lantern and the skin it lights, and the pale cyan of the halo and hair against the dark wood; nothing else is admitted. Small true detail: the lantern's paper sags slightly at its bottom edge where the heat has softened it, and a thin bead of condensation runs down the lacquered snout of the mask, catching one point of orange. Quiet menace, effortlessly cool.
