The Karabiner 98 kurz (German: [kaʁaˈbiːnɐ ˌʔaxtʔʊntˈnɔʏntsɪç ˈkʊɐ̯ts]; meaning "carbine 98 short"), often abbreviated as Kar98k or K98k, is a bolt-action rifle designed for the 7.92×57mm Mauser cartridge. Officially adopted by the German Wehrmacht on June 21, 1935, it became the standard service rifle and represented one of the final evolutions in the long lineage of Mauser military rifles.
Despite the introduction of semi-automatic and fully automatic rifles during World War II, the Kar98k remained Germany's primary service rifle until the war's end in 1945. Following the war, millions of Kar98ks were captured by Soviet forces and distributed as military aid, leading to their continued use in conflicts around the globe whenever they were taken out of storage during periods of unrest.
