Plague doctor

The plague doctor mask was a 17th-century and supposed protective device. The iconic costume, credited to French physician Charles de Lorme in 1619, was a full-length leather or waxed-linen gown, gloves, boots, a hat, and a beaked mask with crystal eyepieces. It has an iconic mask of the Black Death in Europe. The mask's long beak was filled with aromatic herbs, flowers, or substances like camphor, cloves, myrrh, and ambergris. This design was based on the miasma theory of disease, which held that plague was spread through poisonous or "bad" air . The fragrant materials were intended to filter and purify this corrupted air before it reached the doctor's nostrils and lungs . Doctors also carried a wooden cane to examine patients and maintain distance without direct touch. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/plague-doctors-beaked-masks-coronavirus
