Four glowing chemical tubes curve along the outside of the stalk and under the cap rim, rigid glass with metal collars clamped at both ends, filled with a bright amber-green fluid that is brightest where the tube bends and dims along the straights; a hairline of that light catches the nearest edges of the plating, and a faint bloom of it stains the underside of the gills. The bioluminescent light that menacingly pulses through the gill slits and along the seams of the shell is the creature's own, violet-blue against the amber tubes, and it is the only light in the scene: the socket of each eye-like cluster on the front of the cap is a deep saturated blue core that spills onto the surrounding black metal, which stays black, and beyond the creature's rim the background is a flat evenly dark field carrying no detail at all. The silhouette is simple and heavy, one legible mushroom shape with a thick stack of shoulders, and every outline is a stroke of even black weight drawn as if with a brush pen before the fills went down, with the drawn construction still visible in the shape: black under-fill where the colour stops short of the outline, angular joint lines where the skeleton of the pose was blocked in, and a flat single tone inside each colour region, the mechanical parts in graphite, steel grey and near-black, the fungal parts in bruised maroon and dark purple, the glare in amber-green and electric blue. A shadow of the cap falls across the top of the stalk and cuts a hard edge along the gills, and where the light hits the glass tubes the brightest line sits on the far side of the tube, not the side facing the viewer, leaving a soft dark rim on the near glass. Everything is composed so that at first read the creature is a mountain of black machinery and at second read it is a mushroom that has been built. Predatory, monolithic.
