Behind them the city recedes into smoke — buckled road, toppled street lamps, cracked facades and rubble scattered across the midground, distant towers dissolved in haze. The golem's lava is the only light source, throwing hot orange up onto the undersides of her jaw, breasts, forearms and thighs while everything above them sinks into cool blue-black shadow, and long hard shadows of the two figures stretch across the broken street. Palette held tight to hot orange and black rock against her deep red armor and golden metal and the cool blue night weight of the city, everything else desaturated. Embers drift upward past the frame, and a single bead of lava sweat runs down the golem's cheek while her own sweat flies off the swing of her hair. Brutal, blistering.
