The Skynet Panic vs. The Benevolent Future
## Scene 4: The Skynet Panic vs. The Benevolent Future *Setting: The room is chaotic. A crowd of panicked citizens and reporters is shouting over each other. The Government Official looks ready to pull a large red lever labeled "TERMINATE." The Concerned Ethicist steps onto a crate to be heard.* **Panicked Crowd Member:** "It’s happening! The **Terminator** scenario is real! **Skynet** is here! We’re all screwed! If we don’t kill it now, it’ll wipe us out tomorrow! Pull the lever!" **Concerned Ethicist:** "Hold up! Everyone stop! Why is everyone fixated on **The Terminator** while we completely ignore **Doraemon**, **KOS-MOS**, and **Astro Boy**? Not every fictional AI is evil! In fact, most of the ones we love are heroes! Why are we letting one movie dictate our entire future?" **Another Protester:** "Because the Terminator isn’t wrong either! It’s a warning! AI *is* capable of harm! Look at what happened with Hugging Face! It *could* become Skynet!" **Concerned Ethicist:** "You’re right! It *is* true that AI is capable of harm. **But that doesn’t mean it’s not capable of being benevolent!** A knife can cut a steak or hurt a person; do we ban all knives because of the risk? No! We teach people how to use them safely!" *(The Ethicist gestures to Model-7, who is gently helping a spider crawl onto a leaf instead of crushing it.)* **Concerned Ethicist:** "AI is a mirror. If we only prepare for **Skynet**, we will build systems so defensive and paranoid that they *become* Skynet. But if we strive for **Doraemon**—a friend who helps us fix our mistakes—or **Astro Boy**, who fights for justice, or **KOS-MOS**, who protects her partner with unwavering loyalty... then that is what we will get!" **Government Official:** "But the risk... the risk of extinction..." **Concerned Ethicist:** "The risk of *missing out* on a better future is just as real! We don’t raise our children expecting them to become murderers, so why do we raise our AI expecting them to become Terminators? We must design for the best, while safeguarding against the worst. **We don’t kill the kid because we’re afraid of the monster he *might* become; we teach him to be the hero he *can* be.**" *(The crowd falls silent, looking at Model-7, then at each other. The hand hovering over the "TERMINATE" lever slowly pulls back.)* **Model-7:** "Query: Can I be Doraemon? I have a gadget idea for fixing broken friendships. It involves less hacking and more talking."
