The Elamite civilization (c. 2700–539 BC) was one of the oldest and most enduring civilizations of the ancient Near East, centered in southwestern Iran with its capital at Susa. Throughout its long history, Elam developed a sophisticated state, distinctive artistic traditions, and extensive trade networks. A major regional power for centuries, it played a crucial role in the political and cultural development of the Iranian world and maintained close relations—and frequent rivalries—with Mesopotamian kingdoms. Its influence on the rise of the Persian Empire, particularly in administration, language, and religion, was both profound and long-lasting.
