1970年（昭和45年）のこの日、銀座・新宿などで初めて「歩行者天国」が実施された。 警視庁が、「人間性を取り戻す政策」として週末の銀座・新宿・池袋・浅草で自動車の交通を遮断して「歩行者天国」を実施した。「歩行者天国」とは、通常車道とされている部分を曜日や期間により車両通行止めを行い歩行者に開放し、安心して楽しい散策やショッピングができるように設けられたもの。1969年（昭和44年）に北海道旭川市の平和通りで実施されたのが始まりという。 (hoshii_miki)
