The Ptolemaic Kingdom (305–30 BC) was a Hellenistic state founded by Ptolemy I Soter after the death of Alexander the Great. Centered in Egypt with its capital at Alexandria, it became one of the ancient world's greatest centers of learning, commerce, and culture. Ruled by the Ptolemaic dynasty for nearly three centuries, the kingdom blended Greek and Egyptian traditions until its conquest by Rome following the death of Cleopatra VII, the last Ptolemaic ruler.
