Lettopalena Vecchia
Located in Lettopalena Vecchia, Italy The ancient village site was built upon massive limestone blocks created by a prehistoric landslide 5,000 years ago along the right bank of the Aventino River. Historical records are scarce, offering only hints that the area might have been under Roman control. However, it is known that from the 10th century onwards, Count Ruggero of the Marca Teatina granted vast lands to Benedictine monks, who established the Abbey of Santa Maria in Monteplanizio (also referred to as Santa Maria del Popolo). Under Abbot Uberto, the monks organized the regional agrarian economy. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, soil depletion and economic isolation triggered massive waves of emigration to the Americas and Northern Europe, drastically reducing the town's population. Situated in the seismically active Majella zone, the village suffered repeated natural disasters. The devastating 1706 Majella earthquake damaged its stone masonry, while a subsequent major earthquake on September 26, 1933, heavily damaged the historic Church of San Nicola di Bari, necessitating partial reconstruction. However, it was during World War II that Lettopalena Vecchia became part of the Gustav Line. The Germans subjected Lettopalena Vecchia to a scorched-earth strategy to deny the advancing Allies shelter. German troops forcibly evacuated the civilian population into the freezing surrounding mountains and systematically mined and dynamited every stone building. After World War II, the Italian government made no plans to rebuild Lettopalena Vecchia due to the peril of building on the cliffside. Instead, a new village was built upstream along the Aventino River.
