When the opposing side questioned whether any family that takes in a traumatized child automatically gains custody rights, the lawyer answered calmly: “I agree. No one is claiming that. What we are asserting is that this specific case contains every element that justifies granting guardianship, financial capacity, residential stability, suitable family history, proven emotional bond, the minor’s clear consent considering her age and understanding, school integration, psychological support, and the complete absence of any risk to the child.” She looked directly at the judge. “The law does not exist only to decide who holds authority over a child. Saki smiled. “Yes!” “Are you certain?” “Absolutely. I know my parents can’t come back… but I think they would want me to keep living. And I want to keep living.” The judge reviewed the documents one last time and announced: “Guardianship is granted to Saki’s parents under the terms established by this court.” For a few seconds Kiyomi sat frozen. Then she turned to Saki. “So…?” Saki’s smile widened. “You’re staying with us!” Kiyomi burst into tears of pure relief. Saki hugged her tightly, and soon the entire family joined the embrace. “Thank you… thank you…” In the months that followed, Kiyomi officially took the surname Natsuki.
