Seen from far below at a steep low angle, the colossal dragon fills the upper two thirds of the frame, its body rising out of the cloud layer that hides the land beneath. Its forelegs and the enormous talons grip a jagged granite cliff edge that juts into the foreground at the bottom right, rock splintering and crumbling away where the claws dig in, loose stones hanging mid-fall. The long neck arcs up and forward, the horned head tipped down so that both golden red eyes, slit-pupiled and burning with an inner glow, look straight down the camera axis through the mist. Its jaws are slightly parted, a faint curl of smoke and a thread of orange ember-light escaping between the teeth. Along the body, individual black scales catch the sunset as hard gold-edged facets, each a distinct plate, layered like armored tile down the chest and belly, where the gold runs brightest and the black bands divide them. The vast wings are raised and partly spread: the membranes dark as soot-black, the leading bones and the membranes' trailing edges pale bone-white, the two tones meeting in a hard feathered boundary across each wing; the near wing sweeps overhead and out of frame at the top left, catching the last sunlight along its white edge, while the far wing drops behind the shoulder, its silhouette softer in the haze. The tail curls down and around the cliff's flank, its spiked ridge catching the light in a broken line of gold points.
The light comes from a low sun behind and to the right of the dragon: every scale rimmed with orange-gold, the front of the body in deep shadow except for the glow of the eyes and the ember at the mouth. Thin mist drifts between the camera and the body, paling the lower belly and softening the far wing. Sky above is a bruised purple-blue, brightening to hot amber near the horizon line below the cloud sea. The palette is closed: black, gold, bone-white, and red-orange; nothing else admitted.
One tiny human figure stands on the cliff ledge at bottom left, absurdly small, one arm raised and pointing up at the dragon, back to the viewer, dwarfed by a single claw. The dragon's gaze falls on that figure; the figure's head is tilted up at it, feet planted wide on the rock, cloak snapping sideways in the updraft from the wingbeat. Wind drags the mist in streaks past the cliff face, and the loose stones falling from the ledge vanish into the cloud before they land. Awe-struck, overwhelming.
