Her dark hair is gathered neatly into a low, unadorned nape bun to keep it clear of her face, revealing an expression of total concentration: her brows are leveled in quiet determination, lips pressed together in suspended breath, and her dark eyes locked immovably on the paper beneath her hand. She wears a deep indigo silk kimono wrapped with a cream-colored obi sash, its wide sleeves bound securely around her shoulders with a crossed crimson tasuki cord so the fabric cannot touch the wet ink. Spread out over a dark felt mat before her is an elongated sheet of thick, textured white washi paper, pinned at the top edge by a heavy bronze bar paperweight. Her flat left palm presses firmly against the left margin of the paper to hold the sheet taut against the floor. In her right hand, she grips a thick bamboo calligraphy brush upright between her fingers, its tapered goat-hair bristles poised an instant before making contact. Centered vertically on the washi sheet, the auspicious New Year kanji characters "迎春" are partially executed in bold, flowing black sumi ink; along the wet edges of the completed strokes, the dark pigment visibly wicks outward in delicate capillary branches into the raw, absorbent fibers of the mulberry paper. To her right rests a carved slate inkstone with wet black ink pooled in its reservoir and an inkstick laid neatly beside it. Cool winter daylight diffuses through translucent shoji lattice screens on the left, raking across the floor to cast long, soft shadows behind her knees, while a single red winter camellia in an unglazed ceramic vase rests quietly in the alcove behind. Rendered with an ink-wash texture with organic brushstroke edges on a textured fibrous paper background. Quiet concentration.
