From a low angle looking upward with a steep Dutch tilt, a girl with short layered black hair perches with light balance on the ball of one foot atop a thick, moss-grown cedar branch. Her torso pitches forward toward the camera while her other leg floats back in mid-air for counterweight. From between her shoulder blades, a pair of broad, raven-black feathered wings fan out wide into the canopy air, their primary feathers separated and curved under the tension of an updraft. Her left hand is raised in a brisk two-finger salute alongside her temple, while her right arm reaches outward to steady her posture. Her short dark locks part around distinctly pointed ears, whipped across her cheeks by the breeze. Fastened atop her head is a small, faceted red tokin cap flanked by hanging white cords and pom-poms that sway with her sudden landing. She wears a crisp white short-sleeved buttoned shirt with a neat collar, tucked tightly into a pleated black skirt that ripples and billows outward around her thighs. Her gaze locks dead onto the viewer with bright crimson eyes, one eye squeezed shut in a sly wink while her mouth quirks into a confident, teasing grin. Golden late-afternoon sunbeams break diagonally through the upper boughs, striking the glossy black surface of her feathers with sharp amber highlights and outlining the contours of her shoulders. Directly below her wingtips, several scarlet maple leaves are whipped into tight circular vortices, tracing the invisible down-draft of her wings against the shadowed forest floor. Effortlessly spirited.
