Both girls are dropped into full, flat 180-degree straddles, their legs forced completely horizontal and outward along the dry ground, their heels digging into the earth as they strain to push wider. On the left, the girl with long lavender-pink twintails and vivid green eyes plants both trembling palms flat against the dirt between her thighs, knuckles dusty and bearing her weight to keep her hips aligned. Her short-sleeved white PE gym shirt and navy blue buruma are drenched dark with sweat, the saturated cotton clinging translucently to her skin. Her jaw is clenched tight with teeth bared in an agonizing grimace, brow sharply furrowed while glossy tears well in the corners of her squinted eyes. Big, heavy droplets of perspiration run down her flushed temples and drip continuously from the tip of her chin. Directly opposite her, the girl with bright orange hair and matching green eyes mirrors the extreme straddle, her fingers clawing into the soil as her forearms shudder under the strain. Her identical white PE shirt and navy bloomers are heavily soaked through with dark patches of perspiration across her chest and waistband. Her face is contorted in fierce, pained exertion, teeth tightly gritted, tears spilling down her cheeks alongside copious beads of sweat. Their gazes are locked in an unyielding, competitive glare across the short gap between them, neither willing to surrender. Beneath each girl's torso, steady drips of sweat strike the dry schoolyard earth, pooling into dark, damp patches in the dust. Crisp, fallen orange and crimson leaves lie scattered across the dirt around their outstretched legs, some crushed beneath their heels. In the background, schoolyard trees blaze with rich yellow, red, and burnt-orange autumn foliage under a pale, cool sky. Crisp late-afternoon sunlight strikes from a low angle, casting long, sharp shadows across the ground and illuminating the suspended drops of sweat dripping through the chilly autumn air. Fierce athletic rivalry.
