A high-angle view looking down at a petite girl fast asleep on the polished wooden planks of an engawa veranda. She lies on her back, her long black hair sprawling across the dark wood like spilled ink. She is lightly dressed in a thin, oversized white cotton t-shirt that has ridden up slightly, exposing the sharp, pale contrast of tan lines across her thighs and the edges of her shoulders. Her chest is small and flat against the fabric. One arm is thrown loosely above her head, the other resting across her stomach, her fingers curled softly. Her eyes are closed in a deep slumber, her breathing slow and steady. To the side, the shaded interior of the rural home meets the bright, sun-drenched porch, creating a sharp line of shadow that cuts across the wooden floor. The harsh summer light strikes the right side of her face and the warmth of the sun bleaches the distant greenery of the countryside seen beyond the veranda's edge. The air is thick with the oppressive heat of August, evidenced by the slight sheen of perspiration on her forehead and the way the light shimmers on the polished wood. Quiet, humid nostalgia.
