**EXT. KAWAUCHI – PORCH – AFTERNOON** *Ai is sitting on the porch steps, legs crossed, eating a melon pan. Gorou is raking leaves in the garden. The two toddlers are inside, screaming at each other about a spoon.* **GOROU:** *(raking, not looking up)* So. What are you planning to do? **AI:** *(mouth full)* Hm~ **GOROU:** "Hm" is not a plan. **AI:** Maybe... a nurse? One day? **GOROU:** *(rake stops)* ...A nurse. **AI:** They help people! And they get to wear the little cap! And they say "I'm here to help" in a very serious voice and everyone respects them! **GOROU:** Ai. How old were you when I first met you? **AI:** *(thinks very hard)* ...Sixteen? **GOROU:** Sixteen. You are *sixteen*. You have not finished high school. You have not taken a single standardized test. Your entire "plan" is a melon pan and a nurse's cap. **AI:** *(defensive)* I'm a *greedy* idol, Gorou. I want to be a nurse AND a— **GOROU:** You're not an idol anymore. **AI:** ...I want to be a nurse and a *person*. **GOROU:** Fine. A person. Great. Persons need *education*. You're going back to school. **AI:** *(melon pan freezes halfway to her mouth)* ...What. **GOROU:** School. High school. Then, if you want to be a nurse, nursing school. That's the actual path. You can't just... put on a cap and say "I'm here to help." **AI:** But I *am* here to help! I'm helping the babies! **GOROU:** You're feeding them formula and losing to a cat. That's not nursing. **AI:** *(quietly, hurt)* ...The cat is *aggressive*. **GOROU:** *(sighs, sets down the rake, sits next to her)* Look. You spent two years being the most famous person in Japan. You have zero academic credentials. You are sixteen. You are in a town with a population of four thousand. What are you going to do in five years? **AI:** *(long pause)* ...I don't know. **GOROU:** That's fine. That's actually the first honest answer you've given me in two years. But "I don't know" is a *starting point*, not a plan. School gives you a structure. A routine. A reason to get up in the morning that isn't "the babies are screaming." **AI:** *(small smile)* You're very practical. **GOROU:** I'm an actor and a doctor. I've been practical for a living since I was nineteen. You were the impractical one. You were the one who winked at a *stabbing*. **AI:** *(laughing, a real laugh)* Okay, that's fair. **GOROU:** *(picks up the rake again)* Application deadline is in three weeks. I'll help you with the paperwork. **AI:** *(watching him rake, very quiet)* ...Gorou. **GOROU:** Yeah. **AI:** Thank you. For not letting me just... be a person who doesn't know what she's doing. **GOROU:** *(raking, not looking at her)* You'd be terrible at it. You'd probably try to make "confusion" into a *character arc*. **AI:** *(offended)* I would *not*— **GOROU:** You absolutely would. *Inside the house, a baby screams. Both of them look toward the door. Neither of them moves.* **AI:** ...Nursing school. **GOROU:** Nursing school. **AI:** In *five* years. **GOROU:** In five years. *They go back to their respective things. The cat walks across the porch. Ai does not chase it. This is, for the first time in her life, a small victory.* **FADE OUT.**
