A small girl sinks deeply into the cushioned leather backrest of a barber chair, tucking her shoulders downward in an instinctive retreat. Draped over her frame is a cutesy pastel barber cape decorated with tiny star motifs, tied neatly and snugly at her throat. An adult hand enters from the side, fingers cupping her jaw to gently hold her chin completely still. Her right eye is squeezed shut tight against the haircut, while her left green eye is wide, glassy, and brimming with pooled tears, her lips trembling. Half of her long, remarkably thick, dense blonde hair has already been shaved down to a velvety buzzed scalp, leaving an exposed buzzed path next to the remaining bulk, with a lone ahoge tuft standing out above the divide. Electric hair clippers descend directly upon the remaining dense mane, slicing swathes of blonde locks away mid-motion as loose hair cascades in heavy sheets. Across the slick nylon fabric bunched in her lap sits a massive, dense pile of sheared blonde hair, weighing down the folds of the cape. Crisp, cool salon lighting catches the metallic teeth of the clippers, illuminates the texture of the buzzed scalp, and reflects cleanly in the tear brimming in her visible eye, while the salon mirror and background blur into soft bokeh. Reluctant and tenderly helpless.
