Hayden Kossler AKA USS Cavalla

Hayden Janet Kossler One of the many units of the silent service which helped cripple a nation's wartime commerce in World War Two, this is the adopted native of Portsmouth in Virginia (birthplace of her first captain), Groton in Connecticut (where she was built) and Galveston in Texas (where she was preserved as a memorial) reborn and Gifted as Hayden Kossler, the living divine spirit of the submarine USS Cavalla. Preserved as a memorial for decades on the Galveston waterfront alongside the destroyer escort USS Stewart (now TXNS Catherine Stewart), she would be damaged thanks to a bad hurricane strike on the area in 2008. And while she was subsequently restored to museum worthy status, the arrival of shipgirls in the spring of 2012 (never mind their exposure to the general public in the mid-summer of that year thanks to Luisa von Bismarck AKA DMS Bismarck) made Cavalla's and Stewart's kami restless. It got to the point where the largest ship Cavalla had sunk herself — the armoured aircraft carrier THG Shōkaku, now Gifted as Matsubara Kanako — would personally plead with President Jed Bartlet to allow them both to be reborn. It would happen on Hallowe'en day in 2012...and just in time, too; supernatural activity in the area would see Hayden and Catherine join forces with Kanako and her sister Suzue (THG Zuikaku) to deal with a chupacabra outbreak in the Galveston area. Thanks to Hayden saving the local member of the Magical Congress from one creature's attack, she was personally awarded the Magical Medal of the United States, the third-highest ranking magical-only award of valour/meritous service given by the Department of Magic. Since that time, Hayden has made her civilian home in Galveston even if she also frequents San Antonio (where the shipgirl contingent of the United States Joint Specialized Warfare Command his based) and Groton. Hayden and Kanako aren't close friends, but they do respect each other.

Her posture carries a buoyant mid-air tilt, with one knee slightly bent and the other leg trailing downward as she hovers in the sea breeze. With her left hand, she grips the front brim of a broad-brimmed white ten-gallon hat circled by a dark blue hatband, doffing and tipping it forward in a cordial greeting directly toward the viewer, while her right arm extends outward to steady her balance. Her long blonde hair is divided by a neat center part into framing sidebangs and twin flared hair flaps at her cheeks, anchored by an upright ahoge at the crown and a thick, long ponytail that sweeps backward on the air currents. Across her upper face, dark blue protective goggles rest snugly over her eyes, their transparent tinted lenses clearly revealing her lively brown eyes as she directs an open, cheerful smile at the camera. She wears a form-fitting dark blue one-piece swimsuit cut with a sleeveless halter line that leaves her upper arms and shoulders completely bare, finished with thin black trim along the edges. Set against the fabric of her upper chest is a prominent white five-point star insignia containing an emblem of a grape cluster. A metallic silver belt cinches her waist, supporting compact structured utility pouches resting over both hips. Dark blue fingerless gloves stretch past her elbows up to her biceps with black-trimmed cuffs, mirrored below by dark blue thigh-high boots that rise up her legs and end above the knees with matching black borders. Spread far beneath her suspended boots is an aerial vista of an oceanside beach, where turquoise shallows lap in curling white foam against a sweep of golden sand under an open azure sky. Clear midday sunlight pours from overhead, catching sharp specular glints on the goggles' polished rims and the silver belt hardware while casting the underside of the tipped hat brim into soft shadow. Loose flyaway strands of her ponytail flutter upward in the warm thermal updrafts rising from the coast below, revealing the buoyant air currents that support her flight. Breezy and spirited.
