May I Have This Dance?

Not what I was expecting but I'm loving the way this turned out.

More to See

3 subjects, ghost, black woman, male skeleton, dancing, halloween, red black grey blue and white palette only, full body, wide shot, dutch angle, low angle, from below, dynamic pose, mid-dance, arms up, one leg lifted, open mouth, grin, looking at another, flowing hair, motion lines of cloth, empty dark ballroom, single overhead spotlight From below, on a slight dutch tilt, a trio is caught mid-step in the middle of a dance, all three bent into the same beat. Three figures, wide shot, full bodies inside the frame, an empty dark ballroom floor stretching away behind them. On the left, a tall ghost: a translucent pale-blue ethereal figure floating a hand's width off the floorboards, draped in a tattered floor-length white cotton shroud whose hem hangs in ragged strips and drifts as if underwater, hollow dark sockets for eyes, no feet, the shroud's lowest strips curling and lifting on an updraft; one arm sweeps high overhead, blue-white, the other bent at the hip, and the whole shroud trails a half-beat behind its turn like smoke pulled sideways. Center-right, a black woman with deep ebony skin and a high voluminous afro, sleeveless red satin cocktail dress with black lace trim skimming her knees, black high-heeled pumps, weight on her right heel with the left leg kicked forward and toe pointed, skirt flaring at the hip from the turn, both arms thrown to one side, head tipped back, mouth open in a full laugh with her eyes crescented and fixed on the skeleton beside her. Right of her, a bleached-white male skeleton, dusty charcoal-grey top hat tipped low over the brow, frayed black tailcoat swinging off his shoulders over a tattered white dress shirt, grey silk cravat flapping up, one hand gripping the woman's raised hand and the other flung out wide, ribcage twisting, jaw dropped in a wide grin, empty eye sockets angled up toward her face. Their joined hands are the picture's meeting point: her fingers laced over his bare phalanges, both wrists canted at the same angle mid-swing. One black pump is a half-step off the floor behind her, toe down; the skeleton's boot heel is planted square and the boards under it are scuffed pale. Dust hangs in the air in the empty ballroom, and one hard overhead spotlight is the only light source: it drops a tight cone from above, punching a bright pool on the floorboards where the three stand, the woman's satin catching a long hot highlight along her shoulder and hip, the skeleton's bones blown nearly to white, the ghost's blue shroud glowing faintly from within the cone. Beyond the pool the darkness is absolute; the only other light is a dull blue rim along the far wainscot. Each dancer throws a long shadow away from the cone, and the ghost throws none. Palette is strictly red, black, grey, blue and white, nothing else admitted: red in the woman's dress, black in the lace trim, pumps, tailcoat and shadow, grey in the top hat, cravat and floorboards, blue in the ghost's translucent body and the rim light, white in the shroud, the bones, the dress shirt and the spotlight's core. Dust motes drift through the beam, small pale specks left entirely inside the cone, thin outside it. Joyful, theatrical.
