Spanning the gap where the deck used to be, a chain of orange tabby cats stretches from the near rim to the far rim, each cat braced on the one behind it: every cat's front paws grip hard around the hind legs of the cat ahead, claws dimpling the fur, bodies pulled taut into one continuous living rope, striped tails streaming out sideways in the updraft from the gorge. The nearest cat at the near rim is the one speaking — chin twisted back over its shoulder toward the top of its own back, ears flattened, eyes narrowed to angry slits, mouth open wide in a scolding yowl with one small fang showing. A jagged speech bubble rises from that cat's head and reads "おい、ネズミ、上を通るのはズルいぞ！" in bold hand-lettered Japanese, the bubble's tail pointing down at the shouting cat's mouth. Along the top of the cat chain, a line of small grey mice with pink round ears and long thin tails scampers single-file from the far rim toward the near one, tiny feet denting the cats' fur with every step, tails whipping behind them, whiskers forward, one mouse glancing down at the furious cat with a bright unbothered eye. The cats' fur compresses in shallow dents under each mouse's weight; the bridge ropes creak and shed a few splinters into the gorge. Across the top of the panel, a long rectangular narration box reads "つり橋が落ちてしまった！こうなったら仕方がない！猫さんの手が、前の猫さんの足を掴み、そうして猫さんが繋がる事で、つり橋が完成。" in clean printed Japanese. Bright midday sun from the upper left strikes the cats' orange fur and the mice's grey coats, casting hard short shadows into the fur and dropping the gorge below into deep blue shadow; the palette holds warm orange, dusty grey, splintered wood brown and pale sky blue. Slapstick comic timing, gleefully chaotic.
