More to See

1other, solo, full armor, helmet, mask, hood, hooded cloak, heavy cloak, gauntlets, gloves, greaves, holding weapon, holding scythe, holding sword, dual wielding, night, darkness, gothic, horror, spooky atmosphere, ghostly style, halloween, pumpkins, autumn leaves, from below, foreshortening, low angle, standing on one leg, leaning forward, head tilt, wind, floating fabric, looking at viewer, glowing eyes behind mask, jack-o'-lantern glow, "happy Halloween!!", "its Halloween" The figure is seen from below, low and close, so the armored silhouette looms up against a night sky; one steel-booted foot is planted flat on a cracked pumpkin-littered flagstone, the other knee lifted and braced on a toppled, split jack-o'-lantern, its carved mouth spilling candlelight across the greave. Both fists are closed: the right gauntleted hand grips a long scythe, its crooked black snath shaft slanting up out of frame, the pale curved blade hooked over the figure's shoulder; the left gloved hand within its gauntlet holds a straight sword angled down and forward, the point almost touching the wet stone, the flat of the blade catching a thin cold glint. The full plate armor sits over the body in overlapping plates, blackened steel with tarnished brass edges, and over all of it the heavy hooded cloak falls in a torn, wind-lifted hem, its hood drawn up over the helmet so the helm's visor and the bone-pale mask beneath the visor show only as a narrow lit slot; the wind pushes the cloak's edge out sideways and drags the hood's fabric taut against the helm's curve. The masked face tilts down toward the lens, and behind the eye-slits two small embers of pumpkin-orange light burn, their gaze fixed on the viewer, while a last curl of candle-smoke leaks from the mask's vent. Pumpkins of every size crowd the foreground and the broken stone path, one split open with its wet seeds glistening, their inner candles throwing warm orange pools that gutters and dies a few feet out; the only other light is a weak, cold moon from high above and behind, rimming the helmet's crown, the shoulder plates and the scythe's blade in silver, so each figure throws a long, hard-edged shadow down the slope toward the camera and the darkness beyond the pumpkin-light is complete and black. Autumn leaves, dry and curling, scoot across the flagstones in the wind and pile against the boots, and one leaf is stuck flat to the wet blade of the sword; a thin frost of cold mist hugs the ground, and overhead bare gothic branches and a leaning iron fence cut black shapes into the deep indigo sky. The palette is held to blackened steel, cold moonlit silver-blue, and pumpkin orange, with the bruised browns of dead leaves; nothing else is admitted. High in the upper corner of the frame, clear of the scythe's shaft, floats a ragged speech bubble in pale jagged lettering reading "happy Halloween!!" over "its Halloween", the bubble's tail pointing down toward the masked helm. Quiet dread, richly gothic.
