The light comes from the upper right, a hard sun breaking through a storm ceiling: it strikes the right side of the skull, the ridge of the back and the outer faces of the crimson mane, leaving the left flank of the serpent and the undersides of the coils in deep cool shadow. Where the sun clears the clouds, a column of warm gold light falls across the scales, and the iridescence breaks along it into green-gold and copper along the plate edges, with a single line of specular highlights riding the spine from shoulder to tail tip. Below the clouds sits a dark blue-violet mass of storm shadow, so that the dragon reads bright against the dark, and behind it the sky is a gradient from dark slate to pale flaring gold near the sun, the empty upper right of the frame holding the brightest area as negative space. Palette: gold and crimson on the dragon, luminous warm cream in the lit cloud tops, cool indigo in the shadowed cloud base and the empty sky, nothing else admitted. The head is drawn at the greatest detail -- the eyes, the whisker roots, the antler forks, the fine gill plates at the jaw -- and the detail budget thins as the body recedes into the cloud, the tail tip losing its scale separation into a soft silhouette. Majestic and storm-charged.
