Monkey D. Luffy, also known as "Straw Hat Luffy," was born 19 years ago in Foosha Village to Monkey D. Dragon and an unknown woman[26][32]. His grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, raised him and subjected him to dangerous training to make him stronger[26]. At age 6, Luffy met Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates, who inspired him to become a pirate[26][27]. Luffy ate the Gum-Gum Fruit (Gomu Gomu no Mi), which granted him a rubber body[26][27]. When Shanks left Foosha Village, he gave Luffy his straw hat, telling him to return it once he became a great pirate[29].
Luffy befriended Portgas D. Ace and Sabo, who became his sworn brothers[33]. They shared their dreams of becoming pirates and set out to sea when they turned 17[33]. Sabo died while Luffy and Ace were being held captive by the Bluejam Pirates[37]. Luffy and Ace continued to adventure together until Ace left to become a pirate[38].
At age 17, Luffy set sail from the East Blue Sea to the Grand Line in search of the legendary treasure One Piece to become the Pirate King[26][27][28]. He founded the Straw Hat Pirates and became its captain[26][27]. Luffy has grown stronger over time, mastering different "Gears" and forms of Haki[26][27]. He is now recognized as a member of the Worst Generation and one of the Four Emperors[40].
