The camera sits low and close, tilted up from roughly waist height so the figure looms over the lens: a fat male high school student leaning far forward toward the viewer, both hands planted flat on a desk edge that cuts across the bottom of the frame, his weight tipped onto the desk so the wood takes it and his belly presses down against the edge, shirt fabric bunching and riding up over the waistband. His head is tilted, chin slightly down so he looks at the viewer from under a heavy brow, half-closed eyes, mouth open in a wet exhale, tongue resting on the lower lip. His hair is a single greasy mass, black strands clumped into wet spikes and pasted flat across the forehead, one lock sticking to his temple; the fluorescent tubes above lay a hard white highlight along each clump and along the shine of his nose, cheeks and upper lip, while the underside of his jaw and the folds of his neck fall into a dull shadow. Sweat beads stand out on his forehead and roll down past his ear; dark wet crescents ring the collar and both armpits of the tight white short-sleeved shirt, which strains at the buttons across his chest and gut, and the navy trousers hang loose below. Behind him a plain classroom background sits out of focus: a green chalkboard, blurred desk rows, a window with flat grey daylight. The overhead fluorescent light is the only source, cool and slightly green, flattening the room; the closest sweat droplets catch tiny specular points that the blurred background never does. Palette is limited to the dirty white of the shirt, the navy of the trousers, sickly green-grey background and the warm red of his flushed sweaty face. Unpleasant, clammy.
