The camera stands outside the train on the platform, at chest height, looking straight through the closed glass subway door at the woman facing forward into the frame; the whole shot is built through that pane, so a faint reflection of the platform's edge and ceiling lights ghosts across the glass in front of her and the cool tunnel darkness sits behind her shoulder. Her upper body fills the centre of the door window: dark-skinned, short rough gray hair standing up in uneven spikes that a loose strand has fallen out of, gold eyes, a thin pale scar cutting across the bridge of her nose. She faces the camera dead-on but her head is turned to her left, chin tilted up and away, eyes looking aside toward the car's far end with lids half lowered, the corner of her mouth pulled down and her lips parted on a long slow exhale — an exasperated sigh caught mid-breath, one cheek faintly puffed, both nostrils slightly flared. Her chest is flattened hard against the glass: the black strapless bra and the deep cleavage above it are compressed against the pane, the open white shirt hanging loose on either side of her breasts and pushed back over her shoulders, its button placket gaping wide so her bare midriff and navel show. The open black jacket sits over that, sleeves shoved up, collar loose. Her left forearm braces flat on the glass beside her head, the yellow fingerless gauntlet's knuckles touching the pane, and the glass fogs into two small damp breath-prints in front of her mouth. Below the waist, only the very short denim micro shorts and the long brown belt trailing down past her hip are visible at the bottom of the frame, the belt's end curling where the crowd pins it. Behind her, seen slightly out of focus through her hair and past her ear, a dense wall of anonymous commuters in muted coats presses shoulder to shoulder and jams her forward into the door — anonymous backlit bodies with no faces readable, one gloved hand and a dark sleeve braced on the glass to her right. A single overhead fluorescent strip inside the car lights her from above and slightly behind, laying a cold highlight across the top of her gray hair, the ridge of her breasts squashed on the glass and the length of the yellow gauntlet, while her face falls into soft shadow and the crowd behind her turns to dark undifferentiated silhouettes; the only light outside the car is the platform's dim edge glow catching the glass surface. Everything is desaturated steel, tunnel gray and tired fluorescent green except for her own warm dark skin, the white shirt and the one saturated yellow glove. Cramped, close and quietly irritable.
