1boy, solo, adult man, 30 years old, dark brown hair, short messy dark brown hair, hazel eyes, heavy-lidded tired eyes, dark circles under eyes, stubble, jaw stubble, weathered tired face, thick brown leather coat, brown leather coat with large patch pockets, black t-shirt, dark blue stonewashed jeans, black and red cyberpunk boots, fur-lined boot cuffs, rolling a cigarette, rolling tobacco, cigarette paper, hands held at chest level, sitting, hunched forward, elbows on knees, from side, profile, cowboy shot, dutch angle, looking down, tired expression, light smile absent, night, cigarette in hand, lighter in coat pocket, tobacco pouch in coat pocket, hip flask in coat pocket
Seen from the side, slightly below and tilted a few degrees off level, a thirty-year-old man sits hunched on a low concrete step at night, his body folded forward so his elbows rest on his knees and his spine makes a tired C-curve. His head is tipped down toward his hands, chin lowered, and the near eye glances down at the work between his fingers rather than at the lens; the far eye is lost behind the bridge of his nose. His hair is dark brown, short and slept-in, pushed back off his forehead in a way that shows the receding line at the temples, a few strands falling loose over the brow. Jaw and upper lip carry a day or two of uneven stubble, denser at the chin, catching the light as grit against the skin. The hazel eyes sit in deep sockets with visible shadows beneath, lids heavy and half-lowered, and the mouth is slack at the corners with a faint downward set — weariness held without self-pity.
His hands are the centre of the picture. Both are raised in front of his chest, the left palm cupped open holding a pinch of loose tobacco on a rectangle of thin white cigarette paper, the right hand's thumb and forefinger rolling the paper up from the far edge in a slow curl, the near end still open and spilling a few strands. The paper flexes and dimples under his fingertips; a fine dusting of tobacco shreds has already fallen onto the thigh of his jeans and sits there in a scatter of tiny brown flecks. His weight is on his right hip, right boot planted flat on the step below, left knee raised higher with the left boot's heel hooked on the step edge; the thick black-and-red boot cuffs, fur trim flattened and matted, bunch above the laces.
The coat is the heaviest shape in the frame: thick brown leather, scarred and creased at the elbows, its large patch pockets bulging with three distinct loads — a rectangular lighter in the left breast pocket showing its square corner pressing the flap outward, a soft tobacco pouch sagging in the right hip pocket, and a slim hip flask in the left hip pocket whose flat metal edge lifts the leather seam. The black t-shirt shows at the open collar, dark against his throat. The jeans are dark blue stonewashed, pale at the knees and the fly, wrinkling into hard folds where his hips bend.
Lighting is a single cold streetlamp above and behind him, out of frame at the top left: it rims his hair, the top edge of his shoulder, the raised left knee and the loose tobacco in a thin cold white line, and drops everything below his hands into deep shadow, so his face is lit only by the faint spill on the underside of his jaw and the side of his nose. Beyond the step, the ground falls away into unreadable black; a low wall and a slot of wet asphalt catch one smeared reflection in the background. The palette is nearly monochrome — cold lamp white, asphalt grey, the flat black of the t-shirt, deep shadow brown — with the only warm colour in the image concentrated on his coat's worn leather, the brown tobacco in his palm, and the red band of the boot cuffs. Sharp ink-black linework, high contrast, hard cel shading, crisp edges. Quiet, worn-down calm.
