The camera is low and tilted, looking up past her shoulder so that the full moon hangs directly behind her head: a huge pale disc filling the upper frame, its edge bleeding into a deep midnight-blue sky with a thin veil of cloud drawn across it. She stands against that sky, chin tipped down toward the lens, one bare arm raised and angled across the front of her body, the knife gripped in her fist with the flat of the blade turned to the camera and the point hanging down past her wrist; her other arm rests loosely at her side, fingers curled. Her weight sits on her back leg, hip cocked, one knee bent forward, so the short red skirt swings a little to the side and the ribbon at the front of her white mob cap lifts in the air. Blonde hair, gathered into a long side ponytail that sweeps out to her right and catches moonlight along its outer edge, frames a small pointed face: red eyes half-lidded and fixed on the viewer, one brow lifted, mouth closed in a thin smile with one corner pulled higher than the other. Her crystal wings fan out wide behind her shoulders, the hanging coloured panes letting the moonlight through so each pane throws a faint tinted drop of light onto the empty air behind her, and the frilled collar and puffed short sleeves of her white shirt, the red vest and the ascot at her throat stay mostly in shadow, lit only along their top edges. The moon and a cold rim of light are the only light sources: a hard silver-white line runs down the left side of her hat, her cheek, shoulder and the flat of the blade, while the front of her face and body fall into a soft blue-black shadow, and the tilted angle makes the knife read larger than her face in the lower foreground. The palette holds to red, white, gold and midnight blue, nothing else. Quiet dread, sharply poised.
