One single lock of dark hair lifts away from his temple and streams sideways in the offshore wind, while on the sheltered side of his head the hair stays parted and settled; the same wind presses the turtleneck close to his ribs and lifts the left hem of the overcoat just clear of his thigh, so the cloth does the work of showing which way the air is moving. Palette is sunset orange, dusty rose and violet-blue in the sky, warm rim against cool shadow on the figure, and the charcoal, black and indigo of his clothing kept as near-neutral dark shapes. Detail budget goes to his face at three-quarter view, the collar and lapel edges, the hands bunched in the pockets, and the orange edge running the whole silhouette; the coast and the sea stay loose.
