The camera sits low and tilted a few degrees off level, looking up at one young man in a tight head-and-shoulders close-up so that his chin and the ruffled black cravat at his throat take the foreground and the collar of the black velvet frock coat rises behind his jaw. Light comes from a single soft source low and slightly behind the camera's left, grazing the gold eye and the cheekbone above it while the far side of his face and the hollow beside his nose sink into shadow; a thin cool rim light traces the velvet collar's edge and the tip of his shoulder, and beyond that rim the background is pure darkness with nothing resolved in it. The palette is held to three notes: the deep warm brown of the hair, the black-on-black of velvet, silk and ruffled cloth separated only by how each surface catches the light, and the two unnatural eye colours, blue and gold, as the single saturated events in the frame. Texture sits in the velvet's nap, the silk's sheen and the fine strands of hair at the temple. Cold, still, faintly predatory.
