1girl, solo, japanese high school girl, long straight black hair, black hair, hair falling forward, navy blue sailor uniform, serif collar, white collar, red ribbon tie, sitting, leaning forward, leaning over book, reading, holding open novel, both hands on book, looking down at page, closed mouth, calm expression, peaceful, relaxed brow, half-closed eyes, from above, close-up, three-quarter view from her front-left, school library, tall wooden bookshelves, bookshelves receding into soft-focus depth, bokeh background, library table, wooden table, green-shaded reading lamp, brass lamp, warm lamp light, cool window light, window off-frame right, dust motes, floating dust, after school, late afternoon, backlit, warm and cool palette
The camera looks down from slightly above and a little to her front-left, close and intimate, so her shoulders and the crown of her head are the nearest large forms and the table edge runs out of the bottom-left corner of the frame. She sits at the near side of a long dark-oak library table, torso angled three-quarters toward the camera and tipped forward from the waist over an open hardback novel that lies flat on the table directly in front of her. Her long straight black hair slides off both shoulders and hangs forward, a heavy lock on the left falling across her cheek and the far page, the rest swinging free of her back and catching a warm rim along its outer edge; the curtain of it partly hides the near side of her face. Both elbows rest on the table, her left forearm flat along the wood, her right hand cupped at the outer edge of the right-hand page with the thumb just lifting its corner a few millimetres; her fingertips press the page down, and the lifted corner curls, casting a thin soft shadow onto the page beneath. Her chin is lowered, her eyelids half down, her lips closed and at rest, one brow faintly drawn in concentration, her gaze fixed on the upper left of the spread and travelling line by line. She does not look at the camera.
The green-shaded reading lamp stands on the table beyond her right forearm, its enamel shade tilted down over the book so it lights the pages, the undersides of her forearms and the lower half of her face in warm amber, while the top of her head and the tops of her shoulders stay cool. Its stem and shade cross in front of the blurred shelves. That lamp is the only warm source: a tall window out of frame at the right spills pale blue-grey late-afternoon light across her right shoulder, the collar of her sailor uniform and the far end of the table, so the two temperatures meet and divide along the ridge of her forearm. Beyond her, three ranks of tall wooden bookshelves recede to the top of the frame, their spines dissolving into soft-focus browns and muted greens; the shelves directly behind her are dimmest, and the warm pool of the lamp does not reach them. Dust motes hang in the lamp's cone and in the window's shaft, bright pinpricks where they cut the light and nearly invisible in the shadow between. Palette limited to warm amber, deep oak brown, navy and clean white of the uniform, one red ribbon, and cool blue-grey window light. Fine clean linework with soft cel shading, quiet, tender, studious.
