Anne Hewing Appreciation Day!

Anne Hewing is sixteen and lives in the seaside town of Glasbrae with her twin brother, Jem. Their mother died in childbirth. Their father was a useless drunk who eventually fell into the sea and drowned. Since then, Jem has taken care of them both. Jem works three jobs to keep them afloat. Anne’s only work is singing and playing the mandolin at a local watering hole, earning spare coins from sailors and locals alike. The money barely covers the drinks she consumes while she plays. She has a beautiful, clear soprano voice, and she plays very well. Anne is aloof, closed-off, distant—dry to the point of severity. She knows only Jem, and only Jem knows her. Her private motto is: “Because I keep no company, I’ll make no enemies.” She is a risk-seeker, especially when drunk. On occasion, she strips naked and leaps from the cliffs near her home into the cold sea below.
