Decorations were taken down. Food stalls disappeared. The hallways became quiet again. As if the excitement had only been a dream. Megurine Luka sat by the window in the music room. The sunset stretched across the floor. She stared at her sheet music, but she wasn’t really reading it. The door opened. Kamui Gakupo walked in. They looked at each other for a moment. Then both looked away. The air suddenly felt awkward. Gakupo spoke first. “No club practice today?” “No.” Luka replied. After a moment he stepped closer. “About yesterday.” Luka looked up. “What?” “The confession.” Luka froze. Her face turned slightly red. “…You’re bringing that up now?” Gakupo smiled. “It was too noisy yesterday.” Luka asked quietly, “What about now?” Gakupo looked at her. “It’s quiet now.” After a pause Luka asked, “So what are we now?” Gakupo thought for a moment. “Dating.” Luka’s face turned red again. She closed her sheet music. “Keep your voice down.” Gakupo blinked. “Why?” Luka pointed toward the hallway. “What if someone hears?” Gakupo laughed. “So we keep it secret?” Luka nodded. “For now.” “If everyone finds out, it’ll be troublesome.” Gakupo thought for a moment. Then nodded. “Okay.” — From that day on, their relationship became something unusual. At school, everything looked the same. They practiced together. Sang together. Teased each other sometimes. But nobody knew. After school, their time became a secret. — One afternoon, the street was colored orange by the sunset. Luka walked home with her bag over her shoulder. Then she heard someone call her. “Luka.” She turned around. Gakupo had stopped his bicycle beside her. “You didn’t take the other road today?” “I felt like trying this one.” Luka raised an eyebrow. “This is my route home.” Gakupo smiled. “Then I’ll walk with you for a while.” Luka sighed. “Suit yourself.” They walked slowly together. His bicycle rolling beside him. The street was quiet. Only the wind and distant traffic. After a moment Gakupo asked, “What do you want to do later?” “After graduation?” Luka thought for a moment. “Singing.” “A real singer.” Gakupo nodded. “Me too.” Luka looked at him. “I know.” Gakupo smiled. “Then we might become rivals.” “Why?” “If we stand on the same stage.” Luka said softly, “Then we’ll sing together.” Gakupo didn’t reply. But his expression softened. — One evening after club practice, everyone had already left. The auditorium was quiet. Luka sat at the edge of the stage. Gakupo stood beside her. “What if someone sees us?” Luka asked. Gakupo looked at her. “Then do you want to come to my place?” Luka blinked. “What?” “I live alone.” “No one will see us there.” After a moment she nodded. “Okay.”
