Shamanistic rituals already require careful planning, so security preparations are just one more consideration. Atavistic rituals take a wide range of forms, but all must evoke utmost dread in onlookers. One shaman bathes in worms and spiders at midnight, leaving the hotel door ajar to tempt CHAPTER ONE: CUCKOOS IN THE NEST guests to investigate the strange sounds and smells. Another stalks hikers on misty days, mimicking lupine calls and snarls in the fog to drive them into a Locus infested by spirits. Whatever form they take, the shaman’s rites must evoke fear, enough for the Primordial Dream to churn and surge. It is this power that the shaman harvests and stores to work their magic.
