In the foreground, the smooth, dark-stained timber rim of the high counter crops the lower edge of the frame. Beyond, the changing room stretches out with rows of numbered wooden lockers lining the cedar-panelled walls, stacks of circular wicker baskets resting on low benches, and polished floorboards reflecting the amber ceiling lamps. At the back of the room, through a wide open sliding glass door, billows of thick white steam trail out from the hot bath hall, drifting into the cooler air of the dressing room. Four girls emerge from the steaming doorway in a loose cluster. Leading the group, a girl with long blue-and-white hair with blunt bangs stumbles forward on visibly trembling, unsteady knees; her face is deeply flushed hot pink from the soak, her glossy purple eyes gaze blankly into empty space with a dazed, unfocused stupor, and glistening droplets of water bead across her bare shoulders and collarbones. A single thin white bath towel is only loosely draped across her torso, sagging low and slipping precariously off one shoulder with each wobbly step. Immediately at her side, a companion with pale grey-and-white twintails and soft pink eyes wraps one arm firmly under the dazed girl's elbow, leaning her hip inward to catch her balance and support her weight while looking upward with worried attention. Flanking her other side, a taller woman with dark hair gathered into a long neat braid and clear orange eyes reaches both hands forward, gently bundling and blotting the dripping ends of the blue-and-white hair with a fluffy white towel. Bringing up the rear, a fourth girl with dark purple-streaked hair and short eyebrows walks smoothly forward, holding a stacked woven wicker basket loaded with yellow plastic washbasins and neatly folded bathrobes securely against her midsection, watching the three ahead with a quiet, amused smile. Overhead, tube fluorescent fixtures bathe the room in a gentle, warm golden-white light, casting soft lengthened shadows on the timber floor, where droplets running down the lead girl's ankles leave small, dark circular wet marks that slowly evaporate against the dry wood. Tender nostalgic warmth.
