One girl with floor-length aqua twintails and a grey sleeveless shirt with a necktie is kneeling on the dusty floor, her weight shifted onto her left knee as she leans forward to inspect the contents of an old, overturned wooden chest of drawers. Beside her, a shorter girl with blonde hair and a white sailor-collar shirt crouches low, her knees bent deeply; she holds a small, cracked hand mirror in both hands, tilting it slightly as she gazes into the fractured glass. Both girls wear expressions of soft melancholy, with lowered eyelids and faint, sad gazes. The room is a shell of former comfort: faded floral wallpaper peels away from the walls in long, curled strips, and an old kotatsu table lies overturned in the midground. Thick cobwebs stretch across the corners of the ceiling, and dancing dust motes fill the air. From a boarded-up window on the right, sharp, warm shafts of late afternoon sunlight slant across the room in brilliant god rays, illuminating the grime and the girls' faces while leaving the rest of the room in heavy, contrasting shadow. The palette is a mix of desaturated ochres and greys, pierced by the vivid aqua of the first girl's hair and the golden warmth of the light. Soft film grain permeates the atmosphere, lending a nostalgic, faded quality. Quietly sorrowful.
