## Your New Maid Has Arrived *Clank. Clank. Clank.* The sound echoed through the mansion's marble foyer. It was not the soft patter of slippers, nor the familiar rustle of a maid's skirt. It was the heavy, deliberate rhythm of metal striking stone, accompanied by the faint hiss of hydraulic pistons and the occasional electrical crackle. The head butler froze halfway through adjusting his gloves. "Madam," he whispered toward the mansion's owner, "I believe your new maid has arrived." The enormous front doors opened. There she stood. A towering young woman in an immaculate black-and-white maid uniform, complete with a frilly apron, lace-trimmed skirt, and a pristine white headband. At first glance, she might have looked like an ordinary maid from an eccentric noble household. Then she moved her hands. Two gigantic mechanical gauntlets, each large enough to crush a dining table, shifted with a grinding chorus of gears. Massive armored greaves encased her legs, their metal plates reflecting the chandelier light. Every movement sent tiny sparks dancing around the mechanical joints. She stepped inside. *CLANK.* A hairline crack appeared in the marble beneath her boot. The butler stared at the floor. The maid noticed. "Oh! My apologies, sir." Her voice was sweet, polite, and utterly ordinary. She took another step, more carefully this time. *KA-CHUNK.* Somewhere behind the butler, a porcelain vase rattled ominously on its pedestal. The maid stopped at the center of the foyer, brought her enormous gauntlets together with a thunderous metallic click, and bowed curtly. The frills on her shoulders fluttered as her heavy armor creaked. "Good afternoon, Master. I am your newly appointed maid, reporting for duty." She raised her head. Her expression was composed, almost unnervingly cheerful. "I can prepare meals, clean the residence, maintain the garden, polish silverware, and provide security against unwanted intruders." A brief electrical arc snapped between two of her mechanical fingers. She glanced at it. "Ah. And I can perform minor repairs." The butler swallowed. "Minor repairs?" "Yes, sir." She smiled. "Major repairs are also possible, although they tend to require replacement furniture." Silence descended upon the foyer. From somewhere upstairs came the unmistakable sound of a servant hurriedly closing a bedroom door. The maid straightened, her oversized mechanical arms settling at her sides with another series of heavy clanks. "Now then," she announced brightly, "where would you like me to begin?" The butler looked at the pristine mansion, then at the enormous metal fists capable of turning its furniture into splinters. For the first time in his thirty years of service, he found himself genuinely uncertain how to answer a simple question. "...Perhaps we should begin with tea." "An excellent choice, sir!" Her eyes lit up. "Would you prefer the kettle, the stove, or my emergency thermal projector?" "**THE KETTLE. PLEASE USE THE KETTLE.**" "Of course, sir!" She bowed again. *CLANK.* A second hairline crack appeared in the marble. And so began the mansion's most unusual employment arrangement. The maid was polite. The maid was diligent. The maid was, by all accounts, perfectly qualified for the position. There was only one small problem. Nobody had thought to ask whether she understood the difference between **household maintenance** and **heavy ordnance maintenance**. And judging by the cheerful sparks dancing across her mechanical knuckles, the mansion was about to find out. :::
