Some hands are splayed flat toward the ceiling, others curl inward toward their own palms, several interlock, one jabs a crooked finger upward, fingers wriggle and bend and trail in long wavy distortions like bending smoke or wilting weeds, each ripple rising in a slow S-curve so the whole mass feels soft and unpleasantly fleshy while staying black silhouette. In the lower center of the frame a single figure hangs from the sky, arms flung up and out along a bar of white light, wrists pressed flat against it, body sagging in that crucifixion stillness; the figure is pure black silhouette with a heavy goofy, foolish expression -- head tilted and lolling to one side, an open lopsided mouth, brow buckled, tongue barely visible as a pale grey shape -- and the face is painted many times over, the black of the head thickened and thinned so the mouth reads as a smudged dark mark. The figure's feet dangle, shins slack, and the very ends of the toes dissolve into a soft pale-grey smudge, as if the paint is wearing thin there. Everything else is stillness and texture: the white ground at the bottom has a faint hairline crack of grey running left to right, the haze at the middle carries the greys of distant hands, and the ceiling above is a flat near-black that swallows the tips of the tallest hands. No colour but the greys and the white, no light source beyond the white ground glowing up from below and the ceiling pressing down from above, the figure's black silhouette thrown crisp against the pale haze behind it while the hands nearest the lens blur softer and larger. Absurd and quietly terrible.
