Black pantyhose runs from the skirt hem down both legs, the white leg warmers pushed into soft bunched cuffs around her ankles, the pastel green and white sneakers tipped up and apart in the air, one sole visible with its tread, the three parallel side stripes catching the light. The pink and white scarf loops her neck and one end trails off across the leaves beside her shoulder. Her right arm is stretched out to her right side, elbow bent, fingers open and wiggling just above the leaves, and the black cat sits square beside that hand at her right, front paws planted on a leaf, head lowered and tilted, nose pushed toward her fingertips, one ear swiveled forward and its tail curled around its haunches. Her left hand rests on her own ribcage, fingers curled into the wool of the scarf. Her chin is tipped toward the cat, eyes open and looking at the cat's nose, mouth open in a bright grin, one cheek pushed up by the leaves under her head. Her left knee is drawn up so the skirt drapes over it, the right leg flung out straighter, weight settled through hip and shoulder blade into the litter. The black briefcase lies flat just beyond her right shoulder, handle up, a small metal charm hanging from the handle ring and turned so it catches the light. Light comes from high and slightly to the upper left, warm late-afternoon amber, laying soft leaf shadows across her white blouse and darkening the gaps between leaves; her fan of black hair reads almost blue-black in the highlights and the cat's coat shows one crisp glossy streak along its spine. Red, yellow, white, blue and black carry the whole palette, with the pastel green sneakers as the one cool accent. Quietly blissful.
