The only light comes from a small square window set high in the wall above the head of the bed, and through it the orange sodium glow of the streetlight outside falls in a soft shaft down the length of the mattress, striping across the white sheet, catching the yellow trim on Daisuke's shoulder and the edge of Takeru's blonde hair, and leaving the corners of the bed and the room beyond in near blackness; the faint crossbar shadow of the window frame lies across the sheets. Everything else is dark, a low warm palette of orange light and deep blue-black shadow against the white of the bed. The sheet dips and bunches exactly where their hips and knees press into it, and the light picks out the weave of the cotton where it is stretched. Quiet warmth, deep contentment.
