No moon is in the sky; the only light is a diffuse cold glow from above, violet-grey, that catches the upper surfaces — the crests of the hills, the tops of the cypress, the top edges of the castle walls and the flat faces of the lakes — and leaves every lee side and hollow in absolute blackness, with the mist itself faintly luminous where it crosses a lit crest. The palette is disciplined to deep indigo, black, cold violet and the single note of amber in the castle windows, nothing else admitted. The lower foreground is kept simple and dark, a soft mass of near-black hill that lets the eye travel up the lakes to the castle, and the mist thickens toward the horizon so the far distance fades out. Quiet dread, vast and still.
