The swarm presses right up against her dress's edge and climbs a little over the hem and along the outer forearm, never over her face. Where the mass heaves, it rises in a pale slick mound around her silhouette and sinks again — her body sits in a shallow depression in the living carpet. It lights the upward-facing surfaces — her forehead, the bridge of her nose, the ridge of the fallen dress strap, the curved backs of the maggots — and pools in deep shadow beneath the writhing bodies; the walls hold no windows, only joints of damp mortar and a few streaks of moisture running down. Palette confined to sick green, mould grey-green, the dead white of the dress and the flat violet of her hair. Tender horror, quiet dread.
