sketching by a riverside, 1girl, solo, sitting, seiza, on wooden planks, leaning forward, head tilt, looking down, holding pencil, drawing in sketchbook, sketchbook resting on knee, open sketchbook, pencil in right hand, left hand steadying page, hair over one shoulder, windblown hair, hair tie, short-sleeved blouse, rolled sleeves, knee-length skirt, bare feet, sandals set aside, riverbank, low wooden dock, stepping stones, reeds, clear shallow water, pebbles under water, distant hills, spring afternoon, dappled light, from above, three-quarter view, cowboy shot The camera looks down from above and slightly behind her right shoulder, placing the girl near the lower left of the frame and letting the river run diagonally from the upper right toward the bottom edge. She is a young woman with loosely wavy dark brown hair pulled into a low ponytail that slips forward over her right shoulder, a loosened ribbon holding it; she sits seiza on a sun-bleached wooden dock, both knees folded under her, weight settled onto her heels with a slight forward lean from the hips so her shoulders hang over the sketchbook. The sketchbook lies open across her left thigh, spine creased, and her left hand presses the pages flat at the upper corner while her right hand holds a pencil mid-stroke, its graphite tip touching the paper and its shadow falling short and crisp across the page. Her chin tilts down, eyes lowered to the drawing, brows faintly drawn together in concentration, lips slightly parted; a few strands of hair fall past her cheek and stir in the breeze. Sunlight comes from the upper right, warm and low-angled, catching the top of her head, the rim of the sketchbook and the dock planks, and laying long soft shadows from the reeds across the boards toward her knees; beneath the dock the shallow water clears to show rounded pebbles, and the pencil's tiny wake of graphite dust gathers where her hand pauses. Behind her the river bends around a cluster of tall reeds that bend downstream, and far off low green hills sit hazy at the horizon. Palette: warm ochre wood, pale blue-green water, mossy reed green, soft cream paper, and the deep brown of her hair. Quiet, absorbed afternoon.
