The light comes from a single high sun, warm and slightly behind the camera's left, casting short soft shadows to the right of every figure and laying a broad specular sheen across the one blue surface in the middle of the clearing. That surface is the boy now transformed: a perfectly circular, knee-high disc of glossy blue metal lying flat on the grass, its rim rounded, its top face taut and drum-smooth, beaded all over with tiny sweat droplets that catch the sun in hard white pinpricks. His whole body is stamped into that top face in shallow relief, as though the disc were a cast taken off him. The face sits toward the disc's near edge, tilted slightly off-center: domed forehead, a stamped nose, and two eyes pressed open into flat shallow wells, each filled by a painted spiral spiraling in tight regular turns toward a dark center. Beneath them an open oval mouth is stamped a fingertip deep and stretched into a loose, giddy curve, its lower lip pulled slightly to one side. Two blushing patches sit high on the cheeks as flat circular press-marks of warm red. Above the face the smooth lid of the disc carries the broad stamped relief of his chest, and from the sides of that relief his arms are pressed out flat and raised, bent up and outward with the palms and every finger splayed open in shallow depressions at the disc's outer edge, the finger channels holding little pools of shine. Knuckles is planted square in the middle of the disc, straddling the relief of the chest, sitting heavily with his weight low and both hips sunk into the smooth blue surface so that it dimples very slightly under him. His long red dreadlocks hang in thick tapered spines past his shoulders, a purple-eyed echidna with a heavy jaw and dense muscle mass, broad in the shoulders, proportions tall and mature with no roundness left in them, white gloves flat on his own knees and the thick tail curled out behind him along the disc's surface. He twists his torso back toward the near edge, looks straight down at the stamped face, and grins wide with the corners of his mouth pulled high and the tips of his canines showing, while a flat blush sits across both cheeks. His gaze is locked on the face; the face's spiral eyes are wide open and aimed up at him, the stamped mouth hanging open in dizzy enjoyment. Tails is seated on the disc off to Knuckles' left rear, one hip and one folded leg resting on the blue, the twin fox tails swept out flat behind him across the metal. A small, lithe two-tailed fox with a heavy fall of long blonde hair obscuring one eye, big blue eyes, fox ears pitched forward, dressed in black thigh boots and a black leotard, taller and lankier than a child with long adult limbs. One white-gloved hand rests flat on the disc for balance; he leans a little in toward the face with an amused half-smile, glancing down at it sidelong. Shadow is seated cross-legged on the disc's far side near Knuckles' right, seen foreshortened because of the high angle, his black-and-red quills swept back, red eyes with red irises and black sclera, red-streaked head spines, white gloves and gold ring bracelets on the wrists, tail tucked behind him, body lean and adult-proportioned. He sits straight-backed with his arms folded loosely across one knee, chin slightly down, one eyebrow raised, looking at the flattened face with cool flat skepticism rather than amusement. Behind Knuckles, filling the upper part of the frame, the Master Emerald stands on a stepped stone shrine: a faceted green monolith taller than the seated echidna, lit on its left facets so that the right side falls off into deep green shade, its edges refracting a faint green spill onto the back of Knuckles' head and shoulders. The stamped face on the disc looks out toward the viewer's lower left, the eyes' spirals turning, the mouth fixed open; the only motion implied is a single sweat bead sliding slowly along the disc's curved rim and gathering at the lowest point of its edge. Palette: wet electric blue for the disc with red blush spots, red for Knuckles, black and gold for Shadow, blonde and black for Tails, deep faceted green for the emerald, warm ochre stone and saturated tropical green throughout, with the sky a clean pale blue. Mature, less cartoony illustration with realistic anatomy and grounded weight — wickedly funny, sunlit.
