Both hands grip the mushroom cap's pale, slightly velvety rim — fingers pressed into the give of it, knuckles pale with the effort of holding her lean — and her weight rides forward onto her right boot while her left heel lifts free of the ground, toes still touching. Her chin is lowered and her eyes, wide and dark, are fixed down into the gills beneath the cap; her lips are parted a hair's width in a held breath, one brow lifted. The cap towers above her like a roof, its underside close enough that the fine radial gills curve away and away into shadow; a single dew bead sits on its upper surface and bulges at the edge without falling. Behind her the forest floor recedes out of focus: pale curled fern fronds at her own height, a stretch of moss tufts bigger than her head, a fallen twig crossing the frame behind her shoulders. Low morning sun comes from the left, rimming the dust in a single visible shaft that slants down through the canopy, lighting the near side of her face and her tunic's wool nap while her right cheek and the space under the mushroom cap fall into cool green shadow; the cap casts a soft round-edged shadow that swallows the moss at her boot heels. Palette is forest green, cream, amber light and brown bark, with the dew bead the only bright point. Fine painterly cel shading with soft edge light on the wool and a faint sheen on the mushroom's rim. Quiet wonder.
