two dragons, 2 dragons only, western dragon, eastern dragon, chinese dragon, black dragon, white dragon, flying, soaring, mid-flight, wings spread, serpentine body, long body, horns, scales, sky, clouds, from below, wide shot, looking up, dynamic angle, foreshortening, open sky, daylight, two subjects, no humans, no riders, no text, no buildings
The camera looks up from far below the clouds, the sky filling the whole frame so both dragons are seen against open air, the black western dragon in the lower-left foreground and the white eastern dragon in the upper-right, crossing diagonally away from each other so the frame reads as one sweeping X. The western dragon dominates the near foreground: a heavy leathery-winged black beast banked hard to its left, its huge membrane wings spread wide with the near wing sweeping down toward the camera and its far wing foreshortened to a thin edge, the wing fingers tensed and the membrane bowing upward from the pressure of the turn. Its horned head is angled back and up, jaw slightly parted, one golden eye catching the light as it looks up toward the white dragon. Its taloned forelimbs are tucked under the chest, hind legs trailing with the tail curling behind it in a slow whip, each scale edge catching a thin rim of light. The white eastern dragon rides the higher current at upper right: a long serpentine body looping in two loose S-curves, four clawed feet trailing, a flowing mane and whiskers streaming back along its neck, small antlered horns, and its long body tapering away into the upper-right corner. Its pearlescent white hide glints with faint blue-violet on the shaded underside of each loop, and its head is turned down and forward toward the black dragon, whiskers flicked sideways by the airflow, jaws closed in an easy gliding set. The two fly in a wide spiral around the same wind, not touching, the black dragon's tail and the white dragon's tail crossing in depth but never meeting. Sunlight comes from the upper right behind the white dragon, so the western dragon's near wing is in shadow while the sun rims the upper edges of both creatures and lights the scale ridges; the black dragon casts no visible shadow into empty air but its warm reflected light on the membrane shows the sun direction. The sky is a deep blue that pales toward the right, with high thin cirrus streaks raked diagonally to reinforce the climb and a few soft cumulus banks far below the dragons' flight line, the cloud tops catching the sun. Below the clouds the air hazes out in cool blue. The palette is the black dragon's charcoal against the white dragon's pearl and the two blues of the sky, with warm gold only in the light rim and the western dragon's eye. The detail is concentrated on the western dragon's wing membrane, horn and scales in the foreground and on the eastern dragon's mane and the segmented scutes along its spine, while the distant cloud banks stay as broad soft shapes. The composition is open and upward, with huge negative space of sky above both creatures. Airborne, vast, quietly awe-struck.
