A full-body shot from a low, slightly tilted angle: a fit twenty-three-year-old man stands square to the viewer in the middle of an ordinary Chilean comuna street at night, feet planted shoulder-width apart on cracked paving with his weight sunk into his left hip, both hands shoved deep into the front pocket of an all-black hoodie so the fabric pulls taut across his chest and bunches at his wrists. His skin is a warm light brown, and heavy black dreadlocks fall to his shoulders, one bleached-white lock dropping straight down the center of his forehead and past the bridge of his black-and-white mask, which covers the upper half of his face. Above the mask's edge his eyes are wide open in a fixed, delighted, deeply unsettling stare aimed straight at the viewer, the whites bright and the pupils small; below it the mask's painted grin curves up at both corners, and a lit cigarette juts from the corner of his mouth, its tip glowing orange as a thin curl of smoke drifts up across the white lock. His black cargo pants balloon out wide and soft like ninja trousers down to just below the knee, then cinch tight around his calves, ending in black-and-white high-top sneakers. On his right leg a heavy black cast encases the shin below the knee, and from its open top the dark grip of a pistol and the handle of a knife angle out against his leg, metal catching the streetlight. To his right, sitting at his ankle height, a fluffy black-and-white tuxedo cat wears a smooth human-face mask with the same wide happy eyes and fixed grin, its head tilted up so its mask looks directly at the man's face; the man's stare stays locked forward at the viewer while the cat watches him.
Behind them the street recedes in a row of low, plain one-story houses with tiled roofs, roll-up garage doors, iron grilles over the windows and a few tangled power lines crossing overhead; dim yellow porch lamps and one distant streetlamp pool warm light on the pavement, and their glow is the only warm note in the frame. Above the rooftops the sky is a deep black-blue scattered with sharp stars, shot through near the horizon with a faint sickly green wash that stains the clouds. The whole image is painted in loose watercolor: translucent washes of slate blue, navy and pale steel grey bleed into one another, the man's figure and the cat held in dense near-black and cool blue-grey tones against a colder blue night, paper texture showing through every wash, edges soft and pooling. A single physical detail anchors it: the cigarette's smoke curls up and back toward the man's face, thinning and bending in the still night air before it dissolves against the sky. Creepy, quietly wrong.
