AETHELGARD
WORLD GEOGRAPHY OVERVIEW
Working Draft | 7 November 2026
STATUS AND USE
This document records a proposed high-level geographical description of Aethelgard. It is a working draft, not a finalized world map. Established continent names and political territories are retained. Proposed ocean names, terrain descriptions, and proportions remain suggestions until approved.
CORE GEOGRAPHICAL CONCEPT
Aethelgard has seven continents distributed across a vast planetary surface. The world should feel geographically believable and spacious rather than exaggerated into seven oversized fantasy theme parks.
The continents vary in size and shape. Large oceans separate the major landmasses. Some continents have nearby island chains and smaller archipelagos. Not every coastline is inhabited or explored. Major civilizations occupy only portions of their respective continents, and extensive stretches of land and sea remain outside established maps.
Maritime travel is important. Crossing between continents can take weeks or months depending on distance, ships, weather, and magical assistance.
THE SEVEN CONTINENTS
1. PRIMORDIA
A large, geographically diverse continent with extensive plains, forests, mountain ranges, river systems, and inland basins.
Established political territories:
- Grand Solar Empire of Solaria
- Merchant Oligarchy of Aurum
2. SYLVANNA
A continent characterized by fertile landscapes, extensive forests, rolling hills, rivers, and attractive coastal regions.
Established political territories:
- Sovereignty of the High Aesthetics
- Sun-Kissed Resort Republic
3. VALORIA
A continent of varied terrain, including grasslands, forests, rugged mountains, coastal territories, and numerous islands.
Established political territories:
- Tribal Confederation of Animallia
- Maritime Feline Shallows
4. PANGAEA
An ancient and geographically diverse landmass containing old forests, jungles, wetlands, mountain systems, and unusual geological formations.
Established political territories:
- Sanctuary of Forgotten Bloodlines
- Hidden Mud-Flats of Chuunibyou
5. SUBMERGIA
A continent strongly associated with the ocean, containing extensive coastlines, underwater territories, reefs, deep trenches, and submerged geological formations.
Established political territories:
- Triton Deep Dynasty
- Siren Rock Freeholds
6. SKYE
A continent characterized by elevated terrain, mountainous regions, high plateaus, and floating land formations.
Established political territories:
- Theocracy of the Flawless Wing
- Cloud-Weaver Ascendancy
7. TARTARUS
A continent with rugged highlands, volcanic regions, rocky plains, canyons, mineral-rich territories, and badlands.
Established political territories:
- Demonic Fiend Dominions
- Red-Spear Badlands
These continent descriptions are broad geographical starting points, not finalized terrain maps. The exact shapes, sizes, mountain systems, coastlines, rivers, and climate zones remain to be determined.
THE GREAT OCEANS AND SEAS
The oceans should occupy a substantial portion of the world map. The following are proposed geographical labels only; they are not established canon names.
- The Western Expanse: A broad ocean separating several major continental coastlines.
- The Central Sea: A large interconnected maritime region with numerous islands and established shipping routes.
- The Eastern Deep: An immense ocean with relatively few known islands and large unexplored stretches.
- The Southern Ocean: A vast body of water with unpredictable weather and remote island groups.
- The Northern Waters: Colder seas, scattered islands, and difficult maritime passages.
The seas should contain ordinary and extraordinary features alike: fishing grounds, trading ports, small islands, reefs, shipwrecks, pirate hideouts, isolated communities, and undiscovered places.
THE VAST WILDERNESS
The Vast Wilderness is a major feature of Aethelgard's geography. The proposal is to establish one enormous, continuous wilderness region occupying a substantial portion of a major landmass, rather than scattering all unexplored territory evenly across every continent.
Its possible characteristics include:
- Vast forests, mountain ranges, plains, valleys, wetlands, and river systems.
- Regions absent from modern geographical records.
- Ancient ruins and forgotten settlements.
- Unknown ecosystems and undiscovered species.
- Isolated communities and civilizations.
- Ancient sanctuaries and places associated with forgotten deities.
- Unmapped routes and territories that explorers have yet to document.
The Vast Wilderness is not an empty wasteland. It is a living geographical region whose inhabitants and environments are not fully known to the wider world.
Other continents can still contain unexplored areas, but this is intended to be the world's most prominent wilderness frontier.
POSSIBLE WORLD-MAP PROPORTIONS
For visual planning only:
- Oceans and open seas: approximately 68–72%.
- Major continental landmasses: approximately 28–32%.
- The Vast Wilderness: a substantial portion of one continent.
These are artistic planning proportions, not established planetary measurements or scientific calculations.
PROPOSED GLOBAL ARRANGEMENT
A possible arrangement places the continents around a broad central ocean. Some continents would be relatively close neighbors, while others would be separated by much larger stretches of water.
The Vast Wilderness would occupy a large connected region on one continent, preferably away from its most densely populated political centers.
This arrangement creates three broad geographical experiences:
1. Civilized regions: established countries, towns, roads, ports, and trade.
2. Frontier regions: settlements, outposts, exploration routes, and partially mapped territories.
3. The Vast Wilderness: a huge, living region where maps become unreliable and discoveries remain possible.
OPEN DECISION: LOCATION OF THE VAST WILDERNESS
Pangaea is suggested as a possible location because of its ancient landscapes and association with forgotten bloodlines. This is only a proposal. The Vast Wilderness has not yet been assigned to Pangaea or any other continent.
CONTINUITY AND CANON NOTES
- Aethelgard has seven continents: Primordia, Sylvanna, Valoria, Pangaea, Submergia, Skye, and Tartarus.
- The political territories listed under each continent are established in the current Master Guide.
- The ocean names in this document are proposals, not approved canon.
- The broad terrain descriptions are working concepts, not finalized maps.
- The ocean/land percentages are visual planning estimates only.
- The exact placement of the continents and the Vast Wilderness remains undecided.
- Do not silently equate older regional names from separate exploration notes with these modern continents. Their geographical relationships may remain unresolved until deliberately established.
