1girl, solo, orange hair, ponytail, hair pulled through swim cap, swim cap, school swimsuit, one-piece swimsuit, blue swimsuit, white name tag on chest, smile, open-mouth smile, looking at viewer, kneeling, leaning forward, mayonnaise, smearing, hand on own chest, mayonnaise on skin, mayonnaise on hands, wet skin, shiny skin, bucket, mud bucket, mayonnaise bucket, wooden bucket, metal bucket, poolside, tiles, outdoors, daylight, from above, cowboy shot, dutch angle
The camera looks down from above at a slight dutch tilt: one girl kneels on wet poolside tile, both knees pressed to the ground, hips shifted back over her heels while her upper body leans forward over two buckets set side by side in front of her knees — a galvanized metal bucket on the left brimming with thick brown mud, a second bucket on the right filled to the rim with pale yellow-white mayonnaise with a wooden spoon standing in it. Her left hand is buried wrist-deep in the mayonnaise bucket, lifting a heavy clinging scoop; her right hand is pressed flat to her own collarbone, dragging a glossy white streak down across her chest and over the white name tag stitched to the front of the navy-blue one-piece school swimsuit. Streaks and smears of mayonnaise already coat her: both shoulders, the slope of her neck, the tops of her thighs, a dab on her cheek, some worked into the ends of her orange ponytail where the tail spills through the back of the swim cap. Her orange hair is gathered tight and pulled out through the back of a fitted swim cap, the tail flipping up with motion. She grins broadly straight up at the lens, eyes crinkled with delight, tongue not showing, a bright open-mouthed smile that says she is having the time of her life. A contact sheet of touch points: knees on tile, toes curled under, left forearm against the bucket rim, right palm sliding over her own skin.
The two buckets are the only props; no other clutter on the tiles. The mud bucket is opaque and still, surface matte; the mayonnaise bucket's surface is glossy and holds the drag-marks of her scoop. Water lies in a shallow sheet across the pale blue-grey tile and pools in the grout seams, and the tile joints run diagonally away under the buckets toward the frame edge. A cast shadow falls from her body and both buckets toward the lower left, short and soft, because the light comes from high on the upper right — hard summer daylight that glints off the mayonnaise in a wet specular sheen, leaves the mud dead flat in comparison, and pushes the shadowed underside of her chin and the shadow inside the mud bucket deep and cool against the warm orange of her hair, the warm white of the mayonnaise and the cool navy of the swimsuit. Palette: navy, pale tile grey, warm mayo cream, mud brown and orange — nothing else. Soft haze of heat at the far background, bleached out and illegible. Bright, playful, messily cheerful.
