1girl, solo, hoshino ruby, blonde hair, long hair, hair between eyes, sidelocks, pink eyes, star-shaped pupils, mismatched pupils, disheveled clothes, rumpled white shirt, loosened collar, slipping long sleeves, wrinkled skirt with frills, tears, crying, teary eyes, tears running down cheeks, twisted strained smile, forced smile, trembling, slight pale face, double v, holding up two peace signs, both arms raised, posing for photo, being threatened, off-camera threat, looking at viewer, camera flash, from below, close-up, dutch angle, dim room, harsh direct flash,
A dutch-angle close-up, tilted a few degrees so the floor runs crooked behind her, camera positioned slightly below her raised arms and looking up: the girl fills the frame from mid-thigh to just above her head, alone, her arms thrust up in front of her chest with both hands shaping peace signs, index and middle fingers of each hand extended and split wide, both palms turned out toward the lens. Her long blonde hair, with a thick fall of it between her eyes and two sidelocks framing her jaw, is mussed — strands stuck flat to one wet cheek, the rest hanging in disordered clumps past her shoulders. Her rumpled white shirt is pulled crooked: the collar rides up on one side and gapes on the other, one long sleeve has slid down past the wrist so the cuff bunches at her thumb, the other is shoved up her forearm in folds, and the hem hangs half out over a wrinkled skirt whose frills are crushed and askew. Her face is a fraction paler than it should be, drained at the lips and around the temples, and her pink eyes are wet and glassy with star-shaped pupils blown wide, one pupil a different shape from the other. Tears well along the lower lids and run in two clean tracks down each cheek to the jaw. Her mouth is pulled up at both corners into a smile that does not fit her face — the corners stretched too high, the lower lip trembling against her teeth, the smile fighting the crying and losing. Her whole frame is mid-shudder: the peace signs quiver at the fingertips, her shoulders are hitched up, her chin is tucked a little and her head tilted slightly back, and her hair shivers at the tips with the tremor. She looks straight into the lens, eyes wide and pleading, because there is a photographer in front of her she must smile for — and just at the edge of the frame, out of focus and cropped to a dark shoulder and a forearm, the person threatening her leans in, unseen but present, and the shadow of that arm crosses the bottom corner of the shot. The light is a single hard camera flash fired from the lens position: it flattens her face, bleaches the front of the shirt to a hot white, throws a knife-edged shadow of her raised hands onto the wall behind her, and leaves the rest of the dim room in near-darkness — the flash is the only light, and beyond its cone the surroundings fall away into black. Palette limited to her blonde hair and bleached white shirt against a cold, greenish-black darkness, her pink eyes and the raw red of her tear tracks the only warm notes. The flash is caught mid-burst, so the brightest highlights sit hard and flat on her skin and the shadow behind her is sharp and black. Tense, painful.
